Antique Dovetailed Shipping Box for Horse Nails – with Lid – with Metal Clasp – with Patent Date of 1865 – Seymour Conn.
This box is in superb condition – despite the fact that through the years, the lid has warped a little (see side view picture) and at the best any individual put a round “jar” that has left a circular impression (see picture). The side panel states that it is a VULCAN HORSE NAILS SHIPPING CRATE/BOX. It states at the end panel that this used to be company or box used to be patented in June of 1865 and manufactured by the FOWLER NAIL COMPANY, SEYMOUR, CONN. So, I found out, horse nails are nails for the horseshoes! The paint is a dry red paint. The “lock” doesn’t have the lock mechanism, just the 2 metal pieces – best and backing. the box measures 13.25 inches in length, 7 inches in width and 5 inches in height. The interior of the lid is a little lighter than The interior bottom, on the other hand, both are thought to be “clean”.
